The 2009 La Ricolma is gorgeous. Blackberries, graphite, smoke and violets are some of the nuances that emerge from the glass. San Giusto’s Ricolma is differentiated from most of other Tuscan Merlots for its firm sense of structure and generous tannin, both of which place it closer to Sangiovese than Merlot stylistically. There are more famous (and more expensive!) Merlots being made in Tuscany, but few that consistently reach this level of excellence. Firm tannins suggest the 2009 should be cellared for a handful of years. It is a stellar wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2027.

San Giusto a Rentennano is one of Italy’s leading estates. Brothers Luca and Francesco Martini di Cigala are quiet and unassuming. La Ricolma is made from 100% Merlot grapes especially seclected from prime vineyards and hand-picked when perfectly mature. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks for about 18 days, then racked and pressed. After it is racked once again, the wine is left to mature for 20-22 months in French oak barriques. It is bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 6 months before being released.

During spring and summer we enjoyed average rainfall and temperatures. The grapes were ripening fairly slowly until the end of August. However, some rain and a great difference between day and night temperatures brought the grapes to a perfect level and this is very apparent in this vintage. The wine is intensely flavoured, elegant and well rounded.We harvested these grapes later than is usual in Tuscany. This wine is very intensely flavoured, long, persistent and extremely well rounded. Altogether a great year. Wherever necessary, from 20 to 30% of the grapes were removed from the vines when they were well into production. Best between 2009-2019 and beyond. Serve at 17 to 18°C As the wine is unfiltered, there could be a slight deposit at the bottom of the bottle.(San Giusto A Rentennano)
