Château Paveil de Luze is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. The Château has been owned by the de Luze family for six generations since 1862. The whole land was 120 hectares in the beginning, but part of the vineyards were sold gradually, and then the estate size has been reduced to 32 hectares.
The vineyards were terribly damaged by arctic weather in 1956, but Baron Geoffroy de Luze(5th generation) decided to restore the property in 1960. It took long time, but the Château was revived with a replanting of the vines and new cellar facilities.
In 2004, the Château was taken over by the Baron Frédéric de Luze, 6th generation of the family. He had started full renovation of the Château again for further improvement of the quality. He renewed all the wine-making facilities and hired the team of Stephane Derenoncourt as their consultant for both the winemaking and vineyard management.
The terroir is mostly gravel with some clay in the soils. Traditional grape varieties are planted with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), accompanied by Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The wine of Paveil de Luze is aged in an average of 30% new, French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling.
As a result of efforts for six generations, Paveil de Luze reached the position of top of Cru Bourgeois(Frédéric de Luze was also the director of the Alliance de Cru Bourgeois). This Classic Margaux has great ageing potential, and its excellent quality matches well or often better than many of classified growths. Baron Frédéric de Luze passed away at just 54 years of age in 2016, just after the big achievement.
