B215 DOMAINE DE CHASSORNEY (AURELIEN VERDET) SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE LES GOLLARDES 2022 750ml B213 DOMAINE DE CHASSORNEY (AURELIEN VERDET) SAINT ROMAIN ROUGE SOUS ROCHE 2022 750ml A732 CHANTEREVES NUITS SAINT GEORGES 1ER CRU LES DAMODES 2018 750ml
From the lieu-dit Les Gollardes, located in the northwest part of the appellation. Frédéric Cossard took over this plot from a friend and has been managing it since 2007. The vineyard area is a mere 0.43 hectares, with an average vine age of over 60 years. Aurélien Verdet completed the harvest of Pinot Noir in this lieu-dit in 2022. It was the latest harvest for red wines.

This cuvée is particularly notable for its differences from Frédéric Cossard's style, being thicker and juicy. The wine is elegant, and like Saint Romain Sous Roche and Volnay, it also benefits from long-term aging potential. The wine undergoes 100% whole-cluster fermentation with semi-carbonic maceration in a stainless steel tank. The aging process is conducted in traditional old pièces (228-liter barrels), resulting in a flawless, classic Burgundy.
Frédéric Cossard established Domaine de Chassorney in 1996 and spent 15 years perfecting this 1.4-hectare vineyard, gradually increasing its precision and cultivating it into one of the finest in Burgundy. After a three-year transition period, Aurélien Verdet took over the vineyard in 2022. The old vines, with an average age of over 70 years, produce wines that are like pure essences.

The difference from Frédéric Cossard is that the aging process, which was previously done in egg tanks and qvevris (2018 - 2021), has been switched back to barrels (old barrels), a method that Cossard also used until 2017. Given that Aurélien Verdet is known for crafting restrained and elegant wines, it seems that the merits of Sous Roche are being more directly highlighted as an authentic Burgundy wine. What is clear is the wine's potential for long-term aging.

In the 2022 vintage, Super Pink and Version Sud appear in unexpected styles, but Cuvée M seems to have finished in a style closer to the previous image. The taste is perfectly expressed by this label. Like Carignan, the Mourvèdre grape variety is generally blended with other grape varieties to create balance, but Frédéric Cossard seems to be looking at something different. He used 100% of this unique grape variety to bring out the beauty of Mourvèdre that no one had noticed before.

Frédéric Cossard has a new wine called Cuvée C, made from 100% Carignan. Southern French wines are often made by blending grapes with distinct personalities, such as Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah. However, leave it to Frédéric Cossard, originally from Burgundy, to create an incredibly delicious wine with 100% Carignan! It's juicy, smooth, and you can even sense a delicate touch. It's such a vibrant wine. In 2022, which saw record-breaking drought and heat waves, the grapes suffered from extreme water shortage until just before the harvest. However, rain fell right before the harvest, revitalizing the grapes and leading to a very successful harvest. The label has changed, and the Version Sud has emerged with a completely different taste than last year. In 2022, which saw record drought and intense heat, the grapes suffered from extreme water shortage until right before harvest. The juice was concentrated, resulting in a powerful wine. However, this smoothness enhances its drinkability, and there is no trace of the dullness often found in ordinary Southern French wines. [MOUEIX Vineyards Napa]

I'd put the 2020 Dominus up with the best in the vintage, and Tod Mostero commented that he actually liked the 2020 more than the 2019. I wouldn't go that far, but there's no denying this is a beautiful wine loaded with darker currants, cassis, graphite, and chalky minerality. It's medium to full-bodied, has a dense, inward, concentrated style, fine-grained tannins, and a solid mid-palate of both power and finesse. JD95

[MOUEIX Vineyards Napa]

The 2019 Dominus is blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged in 40% new French oak. Impressively dark-hued in the glass, it yields scents of cherries and cassis on the nose—or is it black cherries and redcurrants? Subtle notes of mocha, pencil shavings and almost Graves-like earthiness wind through the concentrated, medium to full-bodied palate, giving it a sense of savory gravitas, while the finish is silky and long, leaving a lingering residue of soft tannins and mouthwatering freshness. [MOUEIX Vineyards Napa]

The 2018 Dominus slowly emerges from the glass with profound notes of blackcurrant cordial, ripe black plums, boysenberries and Black Forest cake with hints of violets, star anise, cracked black pepper, raspberry leaves and pencil lead, plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit layers, creating a beguiling sense of richness that is beautifully countered by invigorating freshness and great poise, framed by super ripe, plush tannins and beautiful tension, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note and, finally, lots of mineral sparks. For all that it is at the moment, one cannot help but feel that this 2018 is holding something back. Give it a good five years in bottle, at least, and then get set for what I suspect will be a mind-blowing transformation over the next 30 years+. RP99+

Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero pointed out that low-rainfall years—like 2020—can be some of the best performers at Dominus. That said, when rainfall is just a bit more than half of the average of the past 25 years, it can't help but impact the wine. Coupled with the season's warmth, yields were down substantially.

Scents of redcurrants and cherries lead the way, bolstered by notes of dark chocolate and mocha. It's medium to full-bodied and silky in feel, despite a touch of warmth on the palate, while the long finish picks up a hint of red capsicum and a touch of coarseness. RP92

Produced in very limited quantities, Annonce enjoys the same attention as the Grand Vin. A significant portion of Annonce is produced from younger vines, which are part of a replanting program initiated after the Moueix family acquired the estate in 2008. This strategy aims to improve vineyard yield and quality over time as these younger vines mature. It won't be long before the first label "Château Bélair-Monange" is produced from the same vines. Thus, drinking the current Annonce is like drinking the future Château Bélair-Monange. You already understand, of course, that in French, "Annonce" means "announcement" in English, and it also signifies 'sign' or 'omen'. The label depicts an angel as a messenger conveying a bright future for these young vines.

Les Damodes is located on the border with Vosne-Romanée. Over 55 years Vieilles Vignes from 0.3ha small parcel in Les Damodes. Four weeks maceration in wood tank, and four weeks for fermentation by wild yeast. 2018 has a different character compared to 2017, showcasing a striking contrast. It features a warm, rounded, and thick texture with a rich extract. Perhaps due to its location, there are also elements reminiscent of VR, but the unique earthiness distinctly marks it as NSG. Les Damodes consists of areas classified as Village and Premier Cru, but this is classified as Village. However, once tasted, it becomes clear that the quality consistently surpasses that of most other producers' Premier Cru wines.

Following 2018, this is the second production of Mercurey. This time, it is made using Qvevris. When we first tasted the Qvevris wine by Frédéric Cossard immediately after its release (debut was the 2018 vintage), we were bewildered by its extremely unique flavor. However, after observing the maturation process over the years, we have begun to understand Cossard's intentions and the direction in which the wine is heading. It goes without saying that 2019 possesses completely different vintage characteristics compared to the 2018 (which is also controversial), so we highly recommend experiencing both.
